The Muskets made their first trip to the beach side home of the Weston Jets this year and while conditions were difficult the Muskets made the most of the sunshine to get their season back on track. Having fallen from an unbeaten 4-0 start to the year, the Muskets had lost three tough games to drop below Bristol in the standings on 4-3 and needed to start scoring again to push for the finals in September. Their hosts for the day have played admirably in their start to life in the South West Baseball League, but are yet to taste the joy of victory, but the Muskets knew they needed to get off to a good start to ensure the Jets wouldn’t experience it today. The epitome of British summer hit the Muskets this Sunday (July 1st), after a week of sun and heat more akin to the Med than the South West, game day saw the heavens open and thunder rumble. While the weather cancelled games across the SWBL the Muskets hosted the Bats at Canonsgrove and managed to get the game started, although the home side may have preferred the rain to have started earlier. After succumbing to their first defeat of the season against the Plymouth Mariners, the Muskets took on the only undefeated team left in the SWBL on Father’s day, the Exeter Spitfires. It would prove to be the toughest game the Muskets have had this season so far, as an entertaining pitcher’s duel took centre stage.

It was an afternoon to forget for the Muskets down in Plymouth today, with the team taking their first loss of the 2018 season against a merciless Mariners side. Having entered the weekend with a perfect 4-0 record atop the Northern Conference the Muskets were the form team going into their first game against former league champions Plymouth.

The Taunton Muskets hosted the St Austell Claycutters at Cannonsgrove and put on a complete team performance to continue their unbeaten start to the season. The Cornwall outfit are having a good second season in South West Baseball League, however they came unstuck against a Muskets team looking to build on their early season wins.

Another glorious weekend of sunshine meant most of Somerset head to the beach, with the majority taking the short trip down to Devon. The Muskets happily obliged, heading to Newton Abbot to take on the Brewers. The Brewers were looking for back to back wins having beaten the Jets last weekend, while the Muskets were looking to continue their unbeaten start to the season.

The Muskets hosted the newly formed Cardiff Baseball Club in an entertaining double header friendly. The clubs took a win each, as the new boys showed they won’t be push overs if they join the South West Baseball League next season. After their opening day victory over the Bristol Bats the Muskets hosted their first game of the season against the league debutants, Weston Jets. Andres Bianco, after his impressive display as a closer in the previous game, took to the mound to give the Jets their first taste of competitive baseball. Helped by some great defensive plays, especially a couple of impressive throw down tags from catcher Jamie Pollard and second baseman Jake Palmer, meant that Andres limited the Jets to just four runs over seven innings.

The 2018 South West Baseball League Season has finally arrived and opening day saw the Taunton Muskets travel to Bristol to take on the Bats. Both clubs had gone through changes over the off season, with Taunton disbanding the Musketeers to focus on one team this year and Bristol baseball electing to move their Badger’s team to compete in the BBF’s double A, meaning both line ups included some new faces, as well as, some SWBL veterans.

A sunny opening day of the 2017 season saw the Bristol Bats take to the road at Whites Field against the Taunton Muskets. After a scoreless first inning for both, the first runs were put on the board in the 2nd by the Bats with a big, lefty, solo home run and double with one run scored. The Bats added two more to their lead in the 4th before Paul Tweedle, George Braeger and Ben Bowley combined for a text book double play to ease the threat, while pitcher Dave Jessep closed the inning with a strikeout.
