A sunny opening day of the 2017 season saw the Bristol Bats take to the road at Whites Field against the Taunton Muskets. After a scoreless first inning for both, the first runs were put on the board in the 2nd by the Bats with a big, lefty, solo home run and double with one run scored. The Bats added two more to their lead in the 4th before Paul Tweedle, George Braeger and Ben Bowley combined for a text book double play to ease the threat, while pitcher Dave Jessep closed the inning with a strikeout.

The Bats piled on another six runs in the top of the 5th inning, including a further 2 run home run. The Muskets started to make a comeback in the bottom of the inning, with an acrobatic Alan Trunks stealing (torpedoing!) his way around the diamond. This was helped by Jessep as he put 3 runs on the board with his opening home run. From there, the Muskets turned on the defence, only conceding one in 6th and closing out 1,2,3, in the top of the 7th. The bottom of that inning saw the game all square at 11 runs a piece after Jessep bought home 3 with his 2nd home run of the game and Bowley upped the tally with his first dinger (HR) of the season. This was helped by some timely hitting from henry Stirzaker and Richard Birch.

Two runs were plated by the Bats in the top of the 8th, with a reply of 1 run added for the Muskets, with Shaun Lee on a ground rule double.

With a 13-12 lead the bats started the top of the 9th only to be made quick work of with a 1,2,3 as Jessop and Jamie Pollard at Catcher combined for the 12th Bats strikeout of the game. However, despite a valiant effort in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Muskets left 2 on base, with the chance of a walk-off win to fall 13 runs to 12 at the finish.

Overall, with a new look team and excellent team ethos and atmosphere, the Taunton Muskets have much to be proud of and a solid base upon which to build the rest of the season.

Muskets Retain Title, ‘Toons Dent Spitfires’ Hopes

04/08/2016 8:38pm BST by Jamie Pollard

The Muskets went into Sunday’s home game against the Bristol Badgers knowing a win would crown them South West Baseball League champions for the second consecutive season.  Missing usual starting pitcher Miguel, Dave took to the mound and threw a great game, limiting the Badgers to only four runs.  While the Muskets defence worked it magic, the offence backed Dave’s pitching to ensure the Muskets came away with the win, with the home side notching a 20-4 win to retain the title.

Musketoon’s Make History

25/07/2016 10:11pm BST by Jamie Pollard

Sunday the 24th of July saw the South West Baseball Leagues first ever double header, as the Taunton Musketoons took on the Newton Brewers at Micheal’s field.  Having been forced into the unusual fixture due to a previous postponement, there was nothing stopping these games, even the very changeable weather in Devon.  Having already recorded their first ever win at Micheal’s field against the Brewers earlier in the season, the ‘Toon’s were confident coming into the first game and the pressure of knowing any slip ups would hand Exeter Spitfires the division two title, the pressure was certainly on the visiting team to perform.

With the first day of June providing the perfect conditions for baseball the Muskets headed to Bristol to take on the Badgers in the first game between the leagues two new boys. While this fledging Taunton team is just starting to take flight this season, the Badgers had a few experienced players left over from their big league days. However the Muskets boast a former Badger in the form of starting pitcher Miguel Peralta, who again shone with both bat and ball.
